Retina MacBook Pro Review – Coming Soon, New OLED Touch Bar

August 17, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

macbook pro retina 2016 review

The top of the range MacBook Pro is due for a major revamp this fall, 2016 with some interesting new features likely. MacRumors is predicting Touch ID incorporated in the power button, Intel Skylake processors with AMD Graphics and a panel of touch screen function keys. Looks like exciting times for Apple fans.

Apple’s 13 and 15-inch Retina MacBook Pros are the company’s top-tier portable machines, and a major update is expected in the fall of 2016…

The Touch ID button will likely be incorporated into the power button. It is the most logical position for a Touch ID sensor. Rumors also suggest the OLED touch panel may be contextual, with buttons that change based on each app that’s in use.

August 16, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

apple iphone 7 plus first picture

Rumors are rife right now with pictures of the purported iPhone 7 Plus and the supposed Dual Lens camera. This picture featured by macrumors which seems to be the most accurate we have seen over the last few weeks. The pill shaped raised bezel is what we have expected to see.

Will both the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus have dual cameras? We will have to wait and see, it won’t be long now.

Potential First Photo of iPhone 7 Plus Shows Dual-Lens Camera and Smart Connector. The first possible real photo of the iPhone 7 Plus has surfaced on Chinese website Bastille Post (via user Coming at the PhilMUG forums), providing a closer look at the design of the upcoming smartphone.

The most notable change is the inclusion of a much-rumored dual-lens camera with a protruding, pill-shaped enclosure, as opposed to two separate circular camera openings depicted in some online renderings.

Apple Planning 10.5″ iPad Pro in 2017 withOLED iPad for 2018

August 15, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

apple ipad pro 2

The guy that’s rarely wrong about the future release and development of Apple products, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, is predicting 3 brand new iPads for 2017. A 12.9″ iPad Pro 2 with an OLED screen and the A10X processor for 2018 is something that makes our mouth water. If you held one of the superb large screen iPad Pro’s you’ll know what we mean. Exciting stuff.

Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a new research report outlining his expectations for the future of Apple’s iPad lineup, predicting three new iPads. We expect three new iPads (12.9 iPad Pro 2, new size 10.5 iPad Pro & low-cost 9.7 iPad) to be launched in 2017, though this may not drive shipment growth amid structural headwinds; 2017F shipments to fall 10-20% YoY. Revolutionary iPad model likely to be introduced in 2018F at the earliest, with radical changes in form factor design & user behavior on adoption of flexible AMOLED panel.

Lenovo ThinkPad T560 – Full Review and Benchmarks

July 10, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

When we ‘think’ of ThinkPad laptops here at Laptop Topics our first thought is always of the doyen of corporate laptops, the ThinkPad T400 and T500 Series. With 14-inch and 15-inch screens, rock solid build quality, reliability and performance as a mainstream business laptop there is very little that comes close.

Avram Piltch at Laptop Mag wax’s lyrical about the Thinkpad T560’s staggering battery life, outstanding display and comfortable keyboard and believes that if you want the ultimate 15-inch productivity laptop, the ThinkPad T560 is your best choice.”

If you want the ultimate 15-inch productivity laptop, the ThinkPad T560 is your best choice.

Lenovo’s 14-inch ThinkPad T460 is our favorite business laptop overall, because of its epic battery life, tough chassis, solid performance and snappy keyboard. But for those who want a productivity-centric system with a larger screen, the 15.6-inch ThinkPad T560 offers a similarly excellent combination of usability, durability and security. Starting at a reasonable $809 ($1,286.10 as tested), the T560 one-ups its smaller sibling with a numeric keypad for number crunchers, an optional 3K display and over 21 hours of battery life — the longest of any laptop we’ve tested.

The ThinkPad T560 has the same classic, raven-black ThinkPad aesthetic as most of Lenovo’s other business laptops. It has only a few dashes of color, provided by its bright-red status light and TrackPoint nub, so it won’t wow the hipsters at the coffee shop. However, if you’re buying the T560, you’re probably more interested in durability and usability than style.

Surface Pro 5 release date, news and rumors

June 24, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

The rumor mill is hard at work trying to pin down news and the release date of the Microsoft Surface Pro 5. As Joe Osborne of Techradar says, with Intel’s next generation of processors not due until probably Q4 2016 with the Broadwell-E, Kaby Lake-S, and Apollo Lake Processor families, it’s not likely we will see a new Surface pro 5 until then. There’s also plenty on the wish list like a bigger screen, higher resolution, and longer battery life.

Only time will tell, but if the Surface Pro 5 is anything like we hope, it will surely be a winner and an ever improving iteration of what is now a Microsoft hit

Update: With Intel’s next-generation processor technology not expected to arrive until late 2016, it isn’t likely we’ll see a Surface Pro 5 rollout before December. Although, if more bang for your buck is what you’re looking for, the Asus Transformer 3 Pro might suit your interests.

The impressive (if a bit troubled) Surface Pro 4 is only a few months old, so naturally we technology lovers are already thinking about the fifth edition of Microsoft’s laptop-killing tablet.

In fact, rumors of a Surface Pro 5 release date are already floating around the internet. The keyword there is “rumors”, as none of those reported are citing trustworthy sources, if any at all.

Not to mention that folks are also clamoring across message boards, like Reddit, for their most desired features and improvements. (Can you guess the most popular one? It slant rhymes with “lottery”.)

Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series (7559) Review & Rating

June 24, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

The words ‘entry level’ and gaming laptops don’t normally go together but Dell seems to have pulled the prize out of the bag with the Inspiron 15 7000 Series (7559) according Mathew Buzzi of PCMAG. Powerful enough says Buzzi to win the Dell Entry level gaming Laptop the Editors Choice award taking the crwon from another Dell brand, the Alienware 15. The previos winner being close to $450 more expensive doesnt offer enough of a performance increase to justify the big difference in price.

With its strong build, ample storage, and full HD display, the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series (7559) is an excellent entry-level gaming laptop that delivers better performance than you’d expect for the price.

The Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series (7559) is a gaming laptop that offers solid performance at a very reasonable price (starts at $749.99; $799.99 as tested). This system is powerful enough to provide a smooth gaming experience on all but the highest settings with its full HD display and discrete Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M graphics card, and it can efficiently perform daily work and media tasks when you’re not playing. The Alienware 15, our former Editors’ Choice, is at the very top of the price range for the category, and doesn’t offer a significant enough increase in performance for the price. As such, the Inspiron 15 7000 Series (7559) is our new Editors’ Choice for entry-level gaming laptops.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y700-17 (80Q0001NUS) Review & Rating

June 24, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

lenovo ideapd y700-17

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y700-17 is a powerful entry level gaming system, that according to Matt Buzzi of PCMAG can run demanding games at reasonably high settings. With a Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M graphics card plus an Intel Core i7 processor, the Y700-17 gives excellent performance. You’ll need the room in your budget and more room in your laptop case because this is a large heavy machine that you won;t want to be carrying around too much, but if you want the screen estate and space of a 17″ screen, this strong performing gaming notebook could be it.

Nice price. Fast performance. Plenty of storage, including a solid-state boot drive. Impressive sound system.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y700-17 is an excellent entry-level gaming laptop with a big screen and fast hardware. It can play demanding games smoothly at moderate to high settings, and you get plenty of storage, good port options, and a killer sound system in the bargain.

The 17-inch Lenovo IdeaPad Y700-17 ($1,164.99 as tested) is a powerful entry-level gaming laptop that can run demanding games smoothly at moderate to high settings, thanks to its Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M graphics card and Intel Core i7 processor. The hardware is fast, performing well in our benchmark tests, and it includes plenty of storage in the form of both a traditional spinning hard drive and a solid-state drive (SSD). It also has a wide range of port options, and the sound system, which includes a subwoofer, is impressive. The much moreaffordable 15-inch Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series (7559) remains our Editors’ Choicegiven itsexcellent performance for the price. Still, the IdeaPad Y700-17 is a strong performer that won’t disappoint if you have more room in your budget and want a larger screen.

It looks like news is starting to leak re the forthcoming and much anticipated arrival of of the enthusiast Broadwell-E, consumer Kaby Lake-S processors and the Apollo Lake chips which will bring welcome features to cheaper budget devices. There has been several leaks regarding Intel’s upcoming mainstream and enthusiast platforms and we look forward to developments over the coming weeks and we are hoping to see some specs on the 7th generation mobile processors. Watch this space.

Besides its $1,723 10-core Core i7 Extreme Edition processor, Intel just teased some other chip news during its keynote presentation at Computex. There aren’t many details available, but the company confirmed the the seventh generation of its Core CPU technology will go on sale later this year. The Untold Story of Magic Leap, the World’s Most Secretive Startup

May 24, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

In a technology where the game is changing so fast it’s almost impossible to keep up, Magic Leap seems to be just that. A game changer. Rony Abovitz insists that we don’t call his photonic light chip a lens. Is this the future of computing and the direction technology is heading? If it is it seems to be happening at a breakneck speed and we are left wondering just what we will be seeing as consumable retail products in a year to 18 months time

Don’t call it a lens: Magic Leap founder Rony Abovitz displaying his company’s mysterious photonic lightfield chip.

There is something special happening in a generic office park in an uninspiring suburb near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Inside, amid the low gray cubicles, clustered desks, and empty swivel chairs, an impossible 8-inch robot drone from an alien planet hovers chest-high in front of a row of potted plants. It is steampunk-cute, minutely detailed. I can walk around it and examine it from any angle. I can squat to look at its ornate underside. Bending closer, I bring my face to within inches of it to inspect its tiny pipes and protruding armatures. I can see polishing swirls where the metallic surface was “milled.” When I raise a hand, it approaches and extends a glowing appendage to touch my fingertip. I reach out and move it around. I step back across the room to view it from afar. All the while it hums and slowly rotates above a desk.

It looks as real as the lamps and computer monitors around it. It’s not. I’m seeing all this through a synthetic-reality headset. Intellectually, I know this drone is an elaborate simulation, but as far as my eyes are concerned it’s really there, in that ordinary office. It is a virtual object, but there is no evidence of pixels or digital artifacts in its three-dimensional fullness. If I reposition my head just so, I can get the virtual drone to line up in front of a bright office lamp and perceive that it is faintly transparent, but that hint does not impede the strong sense of it being present. This, of course, is one of the great promises of artificial reality—either you get teleported to magical places or magical things get teleported to you. And in this prototype headset, created by the much speculated about, ultrasecretive company called Magic Leap, this alien drone certainly does seem to be transported to this office in Florida—and its reality is stronger than I thought possible.

Virtual reality is posed to become a fundamental technology, and outfits like Magic Leap have an opportunity to become some of the largest companies ever.

OS X 10.11 El Capitan review

May 20, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

el capitan

It looks like El Capitan is ‘ticking’ rather than ‘tocking’ for Danny Thorpe of TechRadar. Why? It’s an update to Yosemite rather than a new release with anything revolutionary.

So nothing totally new but and update worth having all the same.

OS X El Capitan takes the foundation set in place by Yosemite and builds upon it ever so slightly. There are no revolutionary new features or redesigns to be found here, but the tweaks and polish make it a solid update worth grabbing.

Update: If you’re interested in what’s coming after El Capitan, check out everything we know about OS X 10.12, which is expected to launch at WWDC 2016 in June. According to the rumor mill, Apple has new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models in the works which may launch with the new operating system later in the year.

It’s much better to think of El Capitan as an OS X update that adds some spit and polish to its predecessor, OS X 10.10 Yosemite, while also providing some convenient tweaks and features. And despite some minor pain points, Apple has succeeded in that respect.
