Expectations Grow For 2016 MacBook Pro Launch Looks Like Late October

October 3, 2016 by Ian Orford 1 Comment

Rumours are now coming thick and fast from the tech mill with the latest post from 9to5Mac publishing an admittedly vague whisper off the grapevine that the new Apple MacBook Pro 15″ for 2016 will be announced on October the 24th.

Reliable sources are also predicting that Tim Cook will be on stage announcing a new MacBook Air in 13″ and also a brand new iMac with a wait for it, 5k Screen! We like that one, so let’s hope that Tim and his crew deliver.

Get the full run down at 9to5Mac…

With numerous reports suggesting that Apple will launch a new MacBook Pro range in late October, one sketchy rumorsuggests that the keynote presentation will take place on October 24. A Monday doesn’t seem particularly likely, and the ‘multiple sources’ cited are apparently just anonymous emails, but sometime around that date seems more likely than not. Logic dictates that a new OS update will be required for these new machines and if they were ready late September/early October, Apple would have added them to the September event.

Additionally, Apple is known for its lateOctober launches, having had one in October four of the past five years (skipping last year) and it wants to have its channel full of inventory for the runup to the holidays in November. So October is a safe guess for upcoming products…

iPhone 7 Plus Dual-Lens Camera A Major Step Forward In SmartPhone Photography

September 20, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

iphone 7 plus dual camera review

Is the dual lens camera on the iPhone 7 Plus good, or outstanding? Brooks Kraft International Photographer of the year claims that the iPhone 7 Plus camera with its 28mm wide angle lens, F1.8 aperture, and additional 56mm lens make this a great choice for smartphone photographers.

Having received his new iPhone & Plus from Apple before the official release in Septemeber, Kraft was able to really run the new dual lens camera through its paces.

Whilst the conclusion is that optical zoom gives far better resluts than didgital zoom, Brooks Kraft belives that Apple have acheived a major step forward in both iPhone and Smartphone photography

The new dual-lens camera of the new iPhone 7 Plus is possibly the most significant upgrade to an iPhone camera ever.

The iPhone 7 camera’s 28mm wide-angle lens now has an aperture of f1.8, which allows 50% more light to reach the sensor. And the additional 56mm lens, Apple says, will have a number of implications for photo quality.

The improved aperture and the new lens, taken together, make the iPhone 7 Plus camera a far more capable tool for both amateur and pro photographers. But they also make it a more complex one. So we went to photographer Brooks Kraft for help testing the performance of the camera’s new features. Kraft covered the White House for Time from 2001-2011 (spanning both the Bush and Obama administrations) and was named International Photographer of the Year in 2013.

iPhone 7: To Upgrade Or Not? Answer Inside!

September 12, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

apple iphone 7 review

The biggest question most people were asking BEFORE the Apple iPhone 7 launch was, should I, will I be upgrading?

Well, if you’re a SmartPhone Photography freak the answer is a resounding yes, but only if you can upgrade to the iPhone 7 Plus with its amazing dual-lens. This could be the best SmartPhone camera ever, but we will have to wait for more detailed and extensive reviews before we can confirm that.

As Mark Sullivan of Fast Company reports, there are many compelling reasons to upgrade outside of the new camera with their f1.8 aperture lens.

In comes the new A10 Processor, and out goes the 16GB model, (did anybody buy that?) and the headphone jack. Apple’s Phil Schiller delivered a very compelling pitch for the newly announced AirPods. Verdict? It’s the future of SmartPhones. Get with it.

Maybe you had to be there. Maybe not. But when I attended Apple’s event in San Francisco today, the new iPhone 7 line looked a lot better than the leaked specs had us believing it would—especially the iPhone 7 Plus.

So the question we ask with every new phone release—should I upgrade?—is more complicated this time. When the iPhone 6s appeared last year, I had no trouble advising people to get by without 3D Touch and Live Photos, and wait another year to buy.

But this year is different, and I’m not the only one who thinks so. “Internally they have put a lot of interesting things in there,” IDC analyst Tom Mainelli told me after Apple’s press event. “I think if somebody was on the fence, I would have no problem advising them to upgrade.”

iPhone 7: Rumors, specs, release date and features, what we know so far

August 31, 2016 by Leave a Comment

iphone 7 plus release date and review

Apple iPhone 7 Launch Day, Confirmed September 7th

If you’ve been waiting with bated breath for the launch of the new Apple iPhone 7 so you can rush into your cell phone provider and upgrade, then your wait is very nearly over!

September 7th has been announced as the official day for the launch plus, we will likely see the new Apple Watch 2 on the same day.

Here’s what to look for. Absolutely NO headphone jack, storage capacity up to 256GB, the obvious faster A10 processor, AND it looks like a precise, pressure responsive Home Button will be incorporated into the iPhone 7.

To get the run down on all the (virtually) confirmed and rumored updates, including new camera specs pop over to CNET and join Justin Jaffe for a full and comprehensive rundown and video.

August 29, 2016 update: Apple has made it official: something’s happening on September 7 — and it’s most likely the debut of the iPhone 7 (and the Apple Watch 2).

As was rumored for the past few weeks, the company will indeed be hosting an event on the first Wednesday in September; we now know it’s scheduled for 10 a.m. PT and going down at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. This puts us on track for a likely retail release on September 16 or 23.

Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect from Apple at that September 7 event. As a reminder, these range from official reports from anonymous sources to flat-out rumors and educated guesses:

In recent years, Apple has alternated annually between major design changes and minor upgrades. That’s expected to change in 2016. The overall consensus among analysts and rumor-mongers, supported by many unofficial photos and videos leaked during the past few months, is that for the second year in a row we’re likely to see mostly modest, superficial changes — call it the “iPhone 6SS,” if you will.

Retina MacBook Pro Review – Coming Soon, New OLED Touch Bar

August 17, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

macbook pro retina 2016 review

The top of the range MacBook Pro is due for a major revamp this fall, 2016 with some interesting new features likely. MacRumors is predicting Touch ID incorporated in the power button, Intel Skylake processors with AMD Graphics and a panel of touch screen function keys. Looks like exciting times for Apple fans.

Apple’s 13 and 15-inch Retina MacBook Pros are the company’s top-tier portable machines, and a major update is expected in the fall of 2016…

The Touch ID button will likely be incorporated into the power button. It is the most logical position for a Touch ID sensor. Rumors also suggest the OLED touch panel may be contextual, with buttons that change based on each app that’s in use.

First Photo of iPhone 7 Plus Dual-Lens Camera & Smart Connector

August 16, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

apple iphone 7 plus first picture

Rumors are rife right now with pictures of the purported iPhone 7 Plus and the supposed Dual Lens camera. This picture featured by macrumors which seems to be the most accurate we have seen over the last few weeks. The pill shaped raised bezel is what we have expected to see.

Will both the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus have dual cameras? We will have to wait and see, it won’t be long now.

Potential First Photo of iPhone 7 Plus Shows Dual-Lens Camera and Smart Connector. The first possible real photo of the iPhone 7 Plus has surfaced on Chinese website Bastille Post (via user Coming at the PhilMUG forums), providing a closer look at the design of the upcoming smartphone.

The most notable change is the inclusion of a much-rumored dual-lens camera with a protruding, pill-shaped enclosure, as opposed to two separate circular camera openings depicted in some online renderings.

Apple Planning 10.5″ iPad Pro in 2017 withOLED iPad for 2018

August 15, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

apple ipad pro 2

The guy that’s rarely wrong about the future release and development of Apple products, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, is predicting 3 brand new iPads for 2017. A 12.9″ iPad Pro 2 with an OLED screen and the A10X processor for 2018 is something that makes our mouth water. If you held one of the superb large screen iPad Pro’s you’ll know what we mean. Exciting stuff.

Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a new research report outlining his expectations for the future of Apple’s iPad lineup, predicting three new iPads. We expect three new iPads (12.9 iPad Pro 2, new size 10.5 iPad Pro & low-cost 9.7 iPad) to be launched in 2017, though this may not drive shipment growth amid structural headwinds; 2017F shipments to fall 10-20% YoY. Revolutionary iPad model likely to be introduced in 2018F at the earliest, with radical changes in form factor design & user behavior on adoption of flexible AMOLED panel.

MacBook Pro 2016 release date, news and rumors

May 18, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

The news all Apple fans have been waiting for, the eagerly awaited and much anticipated (assumed) redesign of the Apple flagship MacBook Pro range of laptops. Most upgrades over the last couple of years have been purely incremental and it’s really a testament to the superb design of the original MacBooks that they still look as good today.

The rumour mill is in full swing with stories of a newly designed hinge from the company who manufactures the hinge for the Surface Pro, to the number of USB ports, and of course conjecture about the available case colors.

Update: Apple is apparently enlisting the services of Amphenol, which makes hinges for Microsoft’s Surface Pro devices, to manufacture hinges for its rumored super-slim MacBooks.

Apple’s MacBook Pro range hasn’t been updated for some time: the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina was refreshed in March 2015 and the 15-inch in May. New MacBook Pros are clearly imminent. The biggest change is likely to be in the Pros’ processors, and while there are rumours of detachable touchscreens we’d take them with a hefty pinch of salt.

According to one report by DigiTimes, Apple is gearing up to release new 13- and 15-inch MacBooks in the second half of 2016. It reckons they will feature hinges produced using a mechanism called ‘metal injection moulding’. Said to be inspired by Microsoft’s Surface Pro line of devices, the hinges will apparently be manufactured by Ampenol, who makes hinges for Microsoft’s convertible tablet.

The MacBook Pro is due an update, and we think it’ll be a big one. Will the new model be a radical redesign?

Apple MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2015) review

May 18, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

The Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch is currently looking like it needs an upgrade and Apple fans are eagerly awaiting the release and news of the upcoming 2016 MacBook. The paucity of real updates, including the lack of a 5th Gen i7 still means the 15-inch MacBook “remains Apple’s biggest and most powerful laptop, and a great all day, everyday productivity machine” says Dan Ackerman of CNET.

We can safely say that we are looking forward to the release date of the MacBook Pro 2016 as much as anybody else in the industry.

Apple’s MacBook Air and Pro lines have remained steadfastly rock-solid in their look and feel for several generations. Each year brings a handful of tweaks and updates, typically only to internal components, from better hard drives to faster Wi-Fi to new processors. It’s only because both the Air and Pro designs were so far ahead of the curve when first introduced that these laptops still look so up-to-date.

For 2015, nearly every MacBook has received an update of a some kind, although these have largely been of the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it variety. Both theMacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro have moved up to Intel’s fifth-generation Core i-series processors, also known by the codename Broadwell, while the 13-inch Pro also added Apple’s new Force Touch trackpad.

That clickless touchpad, which uses four sensors and some haptic feedback rather than a traditional hinge, was one of the highlights of the new12-inch MacBook , a low-power, 2-pound ultraportable that was Apple’s sole new laptop design in years.

Compared to all the changes listed above, and the entirely new 12-inch MacBook, the 15-inch MacBook Pro feels like it’s been slighted in the update department. The 15-inch Pro gets the Force Touch trackpad, and a faster solid-state hard drive, plus updated graphics in the form of an AMD Radeon R9 M370X GPU. But arguably the most important component upgrade is missing, as the Core i7 CPU here is the same as last year’s model (the fifth-gen Core i7 chips from Intel are only starting to trickle out now).
