Microsoft’s updated Surface Book – A MacBook Pro Beater?

November 11, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

If you’re waiting for the Microsoft Surface Book 2, then Microsofts update to its successful notebook range will disappoint.

If however you’re looking to buy into the much commended Surface Book range then this latest update by Microsoft could be just what you’re looking for. More expensive, certainly heavier, but with up-rated Nvidia GeForce GTX 965M Discrete Graphics, the Performance Base Surface Book’s offer up to a 1TB SSD and 16GB of RAM.

With its 6th gen i7 processor, there is masses of performance and if you’re a gamer you’ll even get away with some casual gaming.

Not the groundbreaking update we were looking for but enough to keep the Surface Book right at the top of our list of laptops to covet.

Microsoft’s updated Surface Book is a big, powerful brute of a laptopA year ago, Microsoft set out to prove to the world that a Windows laptop could hang with the best MacBooks from Apple. The Surface Book, with its head-turning design, wild hinge technology, and detachable screen was just that laptop. Microsoft’s updated Surface Book is a big, powerful brute of a laptop – The Verge

Surface Book 2 release date, news and rumors

microsoft surface book 2 review

When Microsoft launched the Surface Book last year it was a much praised instant hit. This was Microsoft’s first attempt at a ‘real’ laptop, albeit a convertible, and there is no doubt they did a great job.

Despite it’s success, the Surface Book has had a few hiccups, so fans are eager for news of a supposed Surface Book 2

Rumors are rife right now that a new iteration will be released early 2017 along with, wait for it, a Surface Phone and an All In One Surface PC.

Lets hope they can deliver. Because we are waiting with bated breath.

Microsoft released its Surface Book 2-in-1 in October 2015, calling it the “ultimate laptop.” It shipped jam-packed with a detachable screen, Surface Pen support, Intel “Skylake” dual-core processors and Windows 10 Professional. That’s on the low-end configuration. Shell out an extra 200 bucks (£300, AU$600) over the $1,499 (£1,299, AU$1,899) asking price and Microsoft will throw in an Nvidia-based discrete GPU.

Despite an appetizing list of hardware specs, the 2-in-1 didn’t arrive without a few hiccups. There were some complaints surrounding the “Dynamic Fulcrum Hinge” including a gap that’s formed when the laptop is closed. The Clipboard tablet portion of the device has a low battery life, and the pricing is rather steep on the higher end.

So, you can tell that we’re not the only ones already clamoring for Microsoft to improve on an already promising formula. Enter the (would-be) Surface Book 2, a device so highly anticipated that some people are already fabricating leaks just to egg Microsoft on.

Microsoft Surface Book review and update 2016

June 24, 2016 by Leave a Comment

Dan Ackerman of CNET believes that Microsft has a winner on their hands with the new Surface Book. Microsoft has done a great job in engineering the Surface Book and as Dan say’s if Microsoft continues to develop the device, this-this versatile powerful Laptop should develop into a best-in-class device. It’s offering very strong performance and lot’s useful and unique, features, but it does also a have a couple of quirks and omissions that make it feel more like the first draft of an ultimate laptop than the notebook it will become. If you are an early adopter, with the Nvidia Graphics Processor and more storage, then albeit it’s an expensive one, but it could be a good purchase.

What good is a touchscreen tablet and stylus if you can’t really draw? Despite a teenage comic book collection thousands of issues deep (dating roughly 1985-1991), I never had much of a knack as a visual artist, beyond idle doodling. Sure, I’ve got a few standby sketches I can whip up when the need arises, from the googly-eyed generic newspaper strip character to some forced perspective boxes, but does that mean I need a $1,499-and-up laptop-plus-stylus Microsoft Surface Book that practically begs to be used by someone with actual artistic talent?

Microsoft’s other new system, the less expensiveSurface Pro 4 , is clearly intended as a full-time tablet that can double as a part-time laptop, thanks to its clever (but sold separately) keyboard cover. And in practice, the Surface Pro is better as a tablet, and certainly great to draw on, but it doesn’t do as much for the rest of us who live in the slightly more buttoned-down world of offices, meetings, word processing and all the things that work best on a traditional laptop.

Surface Pro 5 release date, news and rumors

June 24, 2016 by Ian Orford Leave a Comment

The rumor mill is hard at work trying to pin down news and the release date of the Microsoft Surface Pro 5. As Joe Osborne of Techradar says, with Intel’s next generation of processors not due until probably Q4 2016 with the Broadwell-E, Kaby Lake-S, and Apollo Lake Processor families, it’s not likely we will see a new Surface pro 5 until then. There’s also plenty on the wish list like a bigger screen, higher resolution, and longer battery life.

Only time will tell, but if the Surface Pro 5 is anything like we hope, it will surely be a winner and an ever improving iteration of what is now a Microsoft hit

Update: With Intel’s next-generation processor technology not expected to arrive until late 2016, it isn’t likely we’ll see a Surface Pro 5 rollout before December. Although, if more bang for your buck is what you’re looking for, the Asus Transformer 3 Pro might suit your interests.

The impressive (if a bit troubled) Surface Pro 4 is only a few months old, so naturally we technology lovers are already thinking about the fifth edition of Microsoft’s laptop-killing tablet.

In fact, rumors of a Surface Pro 5 release date are already floating around the internet. The keyword there is “rumors”, as none of those reported are citing trustworthy sources, if any at all.

Not to mention that folks are also clamoring across message boards, like Reddit, for their most desired features and improvements. (Can you guess the most popular one? It slant rhymes with “lottery”.)
